The Customize Entry Field Value Dialog

The Customize Entry Field Value dialog can be displayed by clicking on the Customize push button in the Properties section of the Edit Entry Field dialog. This dialog presents additional attributes of an entry field related to its data value. The dialog consists of two sections: Validation and Masking.

Validation Section

This section presents the validation attributes for entry fields.

Validation Rule

This field contains the data validation rule (if any) for the entry field. Refer to Data Value Validation Rules for more detailed information about validation rules.

Minimum Input Length

This field contains the minimum number of characters that must be entered into the entry field for the data value to be valid. Refer to Data Value Validation Rules for more detailed information about minimum input lengths and other data validation rules.

Accept Abbreviations

This check box determines if the data value entered into the entry field is can partially match a validation rule (alphanumeric fields only). For example, if the validation rule was "AAA9999", an entered data value of "AAA1" would be accepted if this check box were selected. Otherwise, the value "AAA1" would be rejected.

Blank is $Null

This check box determines if blank values in the entry field should be translated to the Zim null value $Null. If this check box is selected, this translation occurs. Otherwise, it does not.

Value Required

This list box sets the "required" attribute for the entry field. The values are "No", "Yes" and "Immediate". "No" means that blank values in the entry field are accepted. "Yes" means that a non-blank entry must be entered in the field before a FORM INPUT "transmit" action can occur. "Immediate" means that a value must be entered in the field before the field can loose the input focus.

Error Message

This field contains the message to display in the message field in the form (if one exists) when the entered data fails the Validation Rule.

Masking Section

This section presents the attributes which relate to masking data values in entry fields.

Display Mask

This field contains the display mask (if any) to use when data is displayed in the entry field. Refer to Data Value Masking Rules for more detailed information about data masking.

Field Length

This field contains the same value as in the field Length in the Edit Entry Field dialog. It is repeated here for convenience and can be modified.

Input Mask

This field contains the input mask (if any) to use when data is entered in the entry field. Refer to Data Value Masking Rules for more detailed information about data masking.

Compress Mask

This check box determines if the data value delivered into the corresponding form field variable includes the mask characters. If selected, the data value delivered corresponds to the value actually entered by the user. If cleared, the data value delivered includes the mask characters.

Suppress

This check box determines if each character of the data entered by the application end-user is displayed "as is", or displayed as the asterisk (*) character. If selected, the asterisk character appears for each character entered. If cleared, the actual character typed appears. The Suppress option is often used for "password" entry fields.
